EMMA CARLOW: ARTIST
Photography by Graham Carlow
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF…..
I am an artist and I live in Lewes with my family. I have always been interested in, and my work is inspired by folk art because it is about people and society. I like its inclusivity, joy and exuberance. I also enjoy the fact that it embraces all mediums and I have a go at many of them, from ceramics to embroidery, paper cutting to weaving. I have tried having a studio but I’m happiest when working on our kitchen table, so our house is often messy!
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
An early morning cup of tea in bed with books, magazines and no particular place to be.
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON AND WHY?
When I was little, my heroine was Florence from the Magic Roundabout. To some extent she still is, but Charles and Ray Eames are my style icons. Their playful spirit is my daily inspiration.
WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AND READING AT THE MOMENT?
I’ve just discovered a lovely poetry podcast called Poetry Unbound, the presenter has the most beautiful Irish accent. I could listen to it all day! I’m reading a lot of non fiction at the moment, mostly about the flora and fauna of the English countryside. I’m also researching Sussex folk tales.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT SIDELINE?
I love everything about Sideline. The colour palette is right up my street. I’m an indigo fan and I love the way Ellen mixes it with neutrals and accents of colour. I love the attention to detail, from the beautiful embroidery to the excellent button choice. I know that when I buy a piece of clothing from Sideline I will have it for a longtime and that all Ellen’s clothing fits together from one season to the next.
Emma wears SS25 Dawn Jacket and Tilsy Trousers both in indigo, and AW25 Nova Jumper in mushroom.
