Jody Juba: Founder, House of Juba

Tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Jody and I am the founder of House of Juba.  House of Juba is a vibrant, modern artists agency based in Brighton and London, that’s committed to championing work it admires and believes in.

The roster of talent we represent and support is carefully curated. It includes photographers, stylists, prop makers and artists working across fashion, editorial and advertising.

For both our photographers and our clients, House of Juba is distinctive both in its open and honest approach and its professional and positive attitude.

What inspires you?

I am constantly inspired by my surroundings, especially people - I am a big people watcher!  Having worked in the creative industries for over 15 years I have been super lucky to work with some incredible people throughout the years. I was lucky enough to work with and run a gallery with two amazing photographers early in my career, the legendary music photographers David Redfern and Keith Morris. They taught me so much and those tricks of the trade have proved invaluable. They also gave me access to some amazing music venues back in London back in the day….we had a lot of fun! I worked at the V&A straight out of University and that totally fed my passion for fashion and photography.

What makes you happy?

Being happy for me is being by the sea and being with my family. I was born in Canada and my dad was a boat builder, and both granddads were sailors. I love the outdoors, when all is crazy and wild with life I walk on the beach and try to remember what's important.  We get so obsessed with snapping every moment of our lives and checking who's doing what, we all need a bit of time out to think and breath some days and it works wonders for the soul! My 3 boys totally ground me and I think without the support and patience of my husband I would probably be running around in circles A LOT! :)

Who is your style icon and why?

Kate Moss hands down. I could write about this for ages...I met her on my first day at the V&A at a function and was totally in awe. I am all about the strong independent woman, style icons for me are Stella Tennant, Erin O'connor, Chloe Sevigny, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchet. I love people who have their own style, not following the crowd. Knowing whats right for you and what makes you feel confident and sexy. My Grandma has handed down so many amazing vintage pieces to me over the years and I treasure these, jackets my Grandad brought her back from sailing trips over seas in the 50's & 60's. I have two boys so they have to endure a lot of dressing up at home!

What you listening to and reading at the moment?

I have just read David Nichols "Us"…absolutely fab….made me cry….listening to Anohni, super chilled and moving and also blasting out some ibiza tunes after a recent all girls holiday, totally liberating!

What do you like about SIDELINE?

For me its always been about mixing things up, say a really good statement jacket with your favourite jeans or t-shirt. Given my LOVE for jackets I have become a total convert to the SIDELINE jackets….I have 3 in total. I also love the Maggie shawl from the first season (seen in the background in image below).  The shawl is an instant outfit lifter and I always have it in my bag. I love the look and feel of it and it gets a lot of comments, it takes me from day to night and for that reason its my fave piece. The fabulous attention to detail, makes an outfit stunning and makes me feel fab!
